Knowledgebase:
STARTTLS command not implemented error
01 May 2019 02:22 PM

Summary

When attempting to send email from MarkLogic, either from an Application, or Query Console, you might encounter the error "Error sending mail: STARTTLS: 502 5.5.1 Error: command not implemented" error in your MarkLogic Server Error Log. This article will help explain what this error means, as well as provide some ways to resolve it.

What the Error Means

"Command not implemented" means that MarkLogic Server is attempting to send an authenticated email, but the configured smtp relay does not support authentication.

Resolving the Error

This occurs most frequently when the smtp relay setting for MarkLogic server is set to localhost.  The error can be resolved by updating smtp relay setting, found in the Configure --> Groups --> [GroupName]: Configure tab, with the organizational smtp host or relay.  Alternatively, install an smtp server that supports authentication on the system configured as the smtp relay
